Toronto Comic Arts Festival

Yes it’s true. Last year, I stood in line for two hours so my son could get an autograph and a picture with the woman who does the voice of Ash Ketchum at Fan Expo. Sure, I love comics. This weekend however is a different end of the comic spectrum. The Toronto Comic Arts Festival takes over the Toronto Reference Library this weekend. Lots of amazing things, so go and have a look

Michael Cho: Back Alleys and Urban Landscapes

September 29, 2012 at 5:56 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

On Thursday, I went down to Gallery 129  on Ossington Avenue to see a small exhibition of Michael Cho’s work from his book Back Alleys and Urban Landscapes.

The book is a collection of Cho’s paintings of, well, back alleys and urban landscapes in Toronto. Cho has an arresting style which to me calls to mind those phrases about the lonely city. It’s striking the almost total absence of people in these paintings. Haunting.

Unfortunately, the exhibition ends today, but have a look at his stuff at his blog

The book is published by Drawn and Quarterly.

Fathers’ Day Recommendation: Day Tripper

June 16, 2012 at 1:54 pm (Uncategorized) (, )

If you’re giving gifts this year, my recommendation is Day Tripper by Brazilian wunderkinds Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon.

The lead character is a writer. Each chapter tells a story and ends with a death (usually that of the storyteller). Moving without being maudlin, and beautifully illustrated.

C’mon your old man deserves it.
