Random New Year Musings

January 1, 2016 at 11:08 pm (Uncategorized)

My daughter wanted to see the New Year in at her grandparents’ house along with her cousin this year. So, why not, I thought?

It was a bit of a surprise to see dangerous lunatic Jenny McCarthy co-hosting this year’s Dick Clarke’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve along with Fergie and Ryan Seacrest (I suppose we should have looked for Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin instead).  While McCarthy doesn’t want children given perfectly safe vaccinations, she seems to have no problem ingesting any number of chemicals herself – at least that’s what it seemed like on TV last night.

So it was I rose a little later than usual, and instead of working on my resolutions, I ended up reading the paper, and was greeted by the news that Texas was further relaxing its open carry laws.It was interesting to read that even though licensed gun owners can now carry guns openly, many gun owners did not support the bill because they argued the constitution guarantees them a right to carry weapons without a license.

Now, I’m not one of those liberal democrats who argue that gun control will solve all of society’s ills. Violence and gun culture is a deeply entrenched element of society, but you gotta wonder. In a country where going to a school, a bar, the Home Depot, or even parking in a mall during the holiday sales seems to involve gun play do people really need greater access to weapons?  The fact that Ohio was an open-carry state when cops executed Tamir Rice will not be lost on students of irony. (Of course, there might be some details in that case I’m overlooking here, but then, when the prosecutor accuses the family of a murdered child of having an “agenda”  what do you expect?)

It”s going to be a hell of a year. As usual. Back to those resolutions then…
