Whatcha doin’ this weekend? (Free Music in Toronto)

June 17, 2011 at 1:17 am (Uncategorized)

It’s a busy weekend here. I’m not going to mention the Much Music Video Awards, but there are two significant music/culture festivals which wrap up here this weekend

First is the Luminato Festival which started last weekend and finishes Sunday. Basically a multi-disciplinary festival of music, dance, theatre, literature etc. Big show for me is a free Natasha Atlas concert 2PM Saturday at the Festival stage near Metro Hall. Ms Atlas is a Belgian singer who performs in Arabic, English and French. She is absolutely wonderful.

Second is the North By North East music festival. Saturday is the big free show at Dundas Square. Last year it was Iggy. This year it’s Devo at 9:30. Will check that out, and possibly the Cults as well.

See ya.

I’ve been a fan of Natacha Atlas since about 1993, when Transglobal Underground came out with their first album. I would love to go to this! I looked on the Internet to see if I could find any upcoming Natacha Atlas concerts in New York City (especially for free :)), but no luck so far.

It looks as though lots of fun things are happening in Toronto. Slightly off-topic here, there’s a Raj Kapoor film retrospective in July, the first one in North America in 3 decades. (Raj Kapoor – director of classic socialist Bollywood movies of the 1950s…) I was thinking of going within the first week of July because of certain films being shown that I would love to see on the big screen. Unfortunately, I haven’t gone to get my “enhanced ID” yet (passport ran out and you can’t go to Canada from the U.S. with a regular ID the way you used to be able to – you know, new, pointless “anti-terrorism” rules), and I don’t know if I would have one ready in time. Help, I’m stuck in the U.S.!

I saw Natasha Atlas a few years ago inToronto just before the release of Ana Hina. She played an acoustic set before a sit-down audience. The audience seemed to be either young (ish) anglos or older middle easterners. She was absolutely wonderful. Looking forward ot this afternoon’s show.

I’ll look into the Raj Kapoor retrospective. Thanks for the heads-up.

One day we’ll see ya up here, or the next time I’m in NY!
